London City Antiques has dated this Georgian Oak Candle Box to the 18th Century.
Candles were relatively valuable and needed to be stored carefully, both to keep them dry and to protect them from mice and other household pests.

This lovely example is constructed in oak with a sloping hinged lid and shaped backplate pierced with two holes, allowing it to be hung conveniently on a wall. The hinged lid opens to reveal the original deep storage compartment where the household’s supply of candles would have been kept ready for use.

It has a wonderfully simple country-house character, with the warm colour and aged surface of the oak giving it great charm.
Today, it could be used in numerous ways. Hung in a kitchen or hallway, it would make unusual storage for keys, letters or other small everyday items. It could also be used in a bathroom for toiletries, in a study for stationery, or simply displayed as an attractive and interesting piece of late 18th-century domestic history.

Condition report: In good antique condition with age-related wear, marks and variations to the surface consistent with its age and original domestic use. The interior retains considerable evidence of use, adding to its authentic character. Please refer to the photographs.
