Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fitted sewing boxes, also known as work boxes, gained widespread popularity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as decorative storage for embroidery and mending tools. They were commonly crafted for domestic spaces and featured specialised compartments to hold thread, thimbles, scissors, and needle cases.

These boxes were typically constructed using native or imported hardwoods such as walnut, rosewood, or mahogany, often enhanced with marquetry or brass inlays. Interior compartments were lined with silk, velvet, or paper, and included accessories made from mother-of-pearl, bone, ivory, or silver.

Authentic period sewing boxes display hand-cut joinery, period brass hinges, and age-appropriate wear to the exterior finish and interior lining. Original fitted trays, hand-carved accessories, and working locks with period keys further indicate authenticity.

An antique sewing box can be displayed open on a sideboard, console table, or bookshelf to showcase the detailed interior tools and fabric lining. It functions effectively as a decorative accent piece within contemporary or classic interior schemes.

Keep the wooden exterior away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and moisture to prevent veneer warping or fading. Dust gently with a soft cloth and avoid chemical polished solvents on original silk or velvet linings.
