English, ca. 1810

A superb Regency period convex mirror of perfect proportions, retaining its original convex plate within a reeded ebonised slip, fitted within a convex frame fitted with giltwood spheres and surmounted by an acanthus adorned apron. On top stands a large ebonised eagle on a carved rock base, on a giltwood plinth terminating with acanthus leaves on either side. The eagle holds within its beak a further set of spheres, attached by a brass chain.

Characterised by its outward-curving lens, gilded wooden frame, and ornamental carvings such as eagles or foliage, it was designed to reflect light and offer a wide-angle view of a room.

These mirrors were crafted using carved pine or lime wood frames, often finished with clay bole and gold leaf water-gilding. The inner slip framing the glass typically featured ebonised wood, while the mirror glass itself was back-silvered, often using mercury amalgam.

Authentic Regency mirrors exhibit signs of hand-carving on the timber frame, a reddish clay bole layer visible where the gold leaf has worn, and original square-cut wooden backing boards. The glass may show natural age-related oxidisation or slight distortion characteristic of early mercury glass.
