Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the nineteenth century, Italian overmantel mirrors were designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece or console table. Characterised by swept Rococo or Baroque silhouettes, elaborate carved crestings, and gilded finishes, these frames were crafted to reflect light and visually expand formal living spaces.

Traditional giltwood frames were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with multiple layers of gesso, and smoothed. A red or yellow clay bole base was applied before micro-thin gold leaf was laid using water gilding techniques, which allowed the surface to be burnished to a high sheen.

Authentic period pieces display signs of age, such as natural oxidisation, flaking gesso, or areas where the underlying red bole clay shows through worn gilding. Original mirror plates often feature subtle grey spotting, desilverization, or hand-drawn bevels, alongside traditional timber backboards fixed with hand-forged nails.

These mirrors act as focal points when mounted above a chimneypiece, radiator cover, or grand entryway console. Placing a pair symmetrically on either side of a room creates classical balance, bridging historical architecture with contemporary minimalist decor.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid flaking delicate gold leaf. Never use water, liquid solvents, or spray cleaners on water-gilded timber; clean mirror glass separately by dabbing a lightly dampened cloth onto the glass surface while keeping liquids clear of the frame edges.
