Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, papier-mache became a widespread material in Britain for producing lightweight furniture and decorative homewares, which were treated with black lacquer, painted motifs, and iridescent mother-of-pearl inlays inspired by East Asian lacquerware.

Craftsmen layered paper sheets saturated with adhesive into moulds before heat-curing them into a dense, solid material. The dried form was turned, polished, coated with asphaltum-based varnish, decorated with shell or gold leaf, and protected beneath lacquer coats.

Authentic 19th-century papier-mache exhibits fine crazing across its dark lacquered finish, accompanied by hand-cut mother-of-pearl decoration set flush with the surface and gilded line work showing subtle surface rub consistent with handling.

An antique lacquered box functions effectively as a decorative accent on a desk, sideboard, or coffee table, adding historical contrast and functional storage for modern stationery or small accessories.

Dust the surface regularly using a clean, soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid water, harsh solvents, or wax polishes, as moisture can seep through hairline cracks in the lacquer, degrading the internal paper layers and loosening shell inlays.
