Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Faux tortoiseshell techniques emerged as an ethical and economical alternative to real hawksbill turtle shell, gaining widespread popularity during the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Artisans replicated the distinctive mottled pattern using paint, lacquer, or horn treated with chemical dyes.

These frames typically utilise a solid timber core, such as pine or oak, which is coated in gesso or lacquer and hand-painted. Later nineteenth-century versions sometimes incorporated stained cattle horn or celluloid veneers over wood to mimic the translucent depth of natural shell.

Authentic period pieces often show subtle hand-painted variations, natural aging or fine crazing in the top lacquer layer, and wooden backings secured with historic joinery. Unlike genuine tortoiseshell, faux finishes will not show natural growth plates under magnification.

A tortoiseshell mirror serves as a focal point when hung above a console table or mantelpiece, contrasting well against warm neutral walls or rich dark paint shades. It pairs effectively with natural timber, brass accents, and structured upholstery.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth to prevent dirt accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, alcohol, or excess water, which can dissolve historical lacquers or loosen delicate painted layers.
