Superb Rare Pair of Mid 18th Century Mahogany Chippendale Pedestal Cabinets of Exceptional Colour

18th century
Description

A superb rare pair of mid 18th century (circa 1760) mahogany Chippendale pedestal cabinets of exceptional colour.

This pair of pedestal cabinets each consist of a solid mahogany top with moulded edge leading down to a door (with key) with central recessed panel and finely carved applied decoration in the Rococo style.

To either side of the doors a pilaster in the form of a column with carved capital to the top and carved plinth below, the doors opening to reveal a shelf divide in one and two sliding trays in the other.

The cabinets are supported on four superbly acanthus carved ogee feet to the front and rear.

This pair of cabinets are in very good condition for age, are of stable construction and can go straight into a home – they could be used for many purposes, as bedside cabinets or in a living room or hall and would also make great pedestals for lamps or busts.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-18th-century Chippendale pedestal cabinets are defined by dense mahogany construction, precise architectural symmetry, and decorative embellishments such as Rococo scrollwork, carved pilasters, and detailed bracket or paw feet.

Georgian cabinetmakers primarily used dense, dark West Indian mahogany timber due to its fine grain, strength, and rich colour, often paired with hand-cut pine or oak drawer linings and hand-forged iron hardware.

Authentic period pieces exhibit evidence of hand-carving with subtle irregularities, hand-sawn oak or pine back panels, natural wood oxidisation inside the cabinet, and period-correct iron locks or brass fittings.

Pedestal cabinets work as statement bedside tables in a bedroom setting, or as symmetrical side cupboards flanking a fireplace or entrance console, providing historical balance against modern decor.

Mahogany furniture should be dusted regularly with a soft dry cloth and treated periodically with clear beeswax polish to nourish the timber, keeping it away from direct heat sources and high humidity fluctuations.
