A characterful Japanese tansu chest with five drawers, each fitted with traditional iron handles and reinforced with hand-forged corner brackets. The piece has a wonderfully aged surface with a warm, mellow patina that speaks to years of use. The drawers are well proportioned, offering practical storage within a compact, functional form typical of regional tansu cabinetry.
The chest retains its original ironwork throughout, including decorative lock plates and corner mounts that frame the structure and give it the distinctive, robust aesthetic associated with Edo–Meiji period domestic furniture. A simple, honest piece with strong presence and excellent colour.
