Antique Edwardian Mahogany Inlaid Bow-ended Display Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

An antique Edwardian mahogany inlaid display cabinet with bowed glass ends, decorative astragal glazing and an elegant fitted interior.

This quality antique cabinet has a shaped moulded cornice above a finely inlaid frieze decorated with linked oval swags and floral motifs. Further boxwood stringing and delicate inlaid borders enhance the rich mahogany throughout.

The central glazed door features an attractive geometric astragal design and opens to reveal three shaped display shelves lined in a pale patterned fabric. Curved glazed panels to each bow end allow displayed objects to be viewed from several angles, while the deep red interior provides a striking backdrop for porcelain, glassware, silver or decorative collections.

The lower section of the door has a beautifully inlaid panel centred by an oval figured mahogany reserve. The cabinet is raised on four slender square tapering legs terminating in spade feet.

A particularly elegant antique display cabinet with graceful proportions and excellent decorative detail, ideal for a drawing room, dining room, hallway or refined contemporary interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian display cabinets, produced between 1901 and 1910, are characterised by lighter, more delicate proportions than earlier Victorian pieces. They frequently feature Sheraton and Hepplewhite revival influences, including fine marquetry inlay, bow or serpentine fronts, astragal glazing, and slender tapered legs.

Primary construction typically utilised solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, often accented with boxwood, satinwood, or rosewood stringing and marquetry. Glazed doors and bow-curved glass side panels were fitted alongside interior velvet or silk linings.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original blown glass with slight surface distortions, and precise marquetry or satinwood crossbanding. Dovetails and drawer linings should show light wear consistent with early 20th-century age.

In modern settings, an Edwardian display cabinet functions as a focal piece when placed against light or neutral walls to highlight its dark mahogany frame. It can be used to display ceramics, glassware, or curated art objects in living rooms, hallways, or dining spaces.

Maintain the wood finish by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer lifting, or glass condensation.
