This set of eight Victorian dining chairs dates from 1860 and comprises six side chairs and a pair of carvers. Constructed from mahogany with a rich brown timber tone, the suite includes padded leather backs and seats in a warm tan shade, finished with brass studding along the edges. The carver chairs display curvaceous balloon-backed profiles with leather infill, pierced foliate carving at the base, and curved arms with scrolling terminals supported by foliate carved uprights. The serpentine seat fronts incorporate simple beading and central foliate carving, resting on elegant cabriole legs with well-carved feet, while the back legs are slightly out-swept. Individual chairs measure 93 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, offering comfortable proportions for a formal dining setup. The suite brings an English Country House aesthetic to a traditional dining room or a spacious reception space, providing ample seating for family gatherings and dinner parties around a large dining table.

Victorian balloon back chairs are characterised by rounded, continuous timber backrest frames that taper towards the seat rail, often featuring carved mid-rails or upholstered centre pads.

Cabinetmakers during the Victorian era primarily utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut, paired with natural horsehair padding and leather or woven fabric upholstery.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved timber detailing, traditional corner-block frame construction, hand-tacked upholstery brass studs, and natural ageing or patination along the lower legs and joints.

These period chairs can be paired with modern minimalist timber or modern glass dining tables to create a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Mahogany frames should be dusted regularly and polished periodically with natural beeswax, while original leather upholstery requires treatment with a specialized leather conditioner to prevent cracking.
