Pair of Neo-rococo Open Armchairs C. 1930s

1920 - 1940
Description

Pair of 1930s Neo-Rococo Armchairs Professionally Upholstered in GP & J Baker Fantasia ‘Spice’ Linen. A beautiful pair of English open armchairs dating from the 1930s, designed in the elegant Neo-Rococo style with clear French Louis XV influence. The finely carved walnut frames feature floral cresting, graceful scrolled arms, serpentine rails and cabriole legs, giving the chairs an elegant and timeless silhouette. The chairs have been professionally reupholstered in the celebrated GP & J Baker ‘Fantasia’ linen in the Spice colourway. This iconic design depicts exotic birds, leopards and stylised foliage in a sophisticated palette of warm spice, sage green, soft pink and cream. The upholstery has been finished with traditional double piping, highlighting the elegant curves of the frames. The warm honey-coloured timber beautifully complements the rich tones of the fabric, creating a pair of chairs that feel equally at home in a classic country house, a contemporary interior or an eclectic townhouse. Seat Height: 42 cm

Condition: The frames are solid and sturdy with an attractive aged patina and light cosmetic wear consistent with their age, adding to their character. The newly completed upholstery is in excellent condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neo-Rococo furniture, popularised during the 19th and early 20th centuries, revives the 18th-century French Louis XV style. It features exaggerated curves, asymmetric scrollwork, cabriole legs, and detailed botanical carvings.

Frames are typically crafted from dense hardwoods such as walnut, beech, or oak to facilitate fine hand carving. Upholstery frequently utilises woven tapestries, brocades, or jacquard fabrics depicting floral and naturalistic scenes.

Authentic pieces feature traditional joinery, such as mortise and tenon joints, alongside hand-carved accents on the crest rail and apron. Mid-20th-century examples often combine machine-assisted finishing with woven webbing and steel spring construction within the seat frame.

Positioning a pair of open armchairs opposite a contemporary sofa creates balanced contrast in a living room. Setting them against neutral wall tones alongside glass or brass side tables emphasizes their carved wooden silhouettes.

Dust the carved woodwork regularly with a soft brush and apply natural beeswax annually to maintain the timber finish. Clean tapestry fabric using a low-suction vacuum attachment, avoiding liquid cleaners to prevent moisture damage or colour bleeding.
