Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century silver-gilt mirrors feature wooden or gesso frames coated with thin sheets of silver leaf, often toned or glazed to produce a warm metallic sheen. Frame designs from this era frequently drew inspiration from Rococo shapes, incorporating contoured profiles and undulating lines.

These mirrors were constructed using a hand-carved wood or moulded gesso frame, coated with clay bole before applying silver leafing. The reflective surface comprised glass silvered with mercury or chemical silvering compounds.

Authentic pieces feature signs of natural ageing, including gentle oxidisation of the silver leaf, dark foxing spots on the mercury glass, and visible undertones of red or yellow clay bole where the gilded surface has worn.

Place a small silver-gilt mirror on a dark timber console table, mantelpiece, or sideboard to create contrast. Layering it alongside modern artwork or structured ceramic pieces highlights its soft metallic tone and historic silhouette.

Dust the frame lightly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid solvents or abrasive cleaners that can strip delicate silver leaf. Clean the glass plate carefully using a slightly damp cotton swab, avoiding moisture contact with the frame.
