Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

This petite French display cabinet belongs to the Louis XV style and dates from 1900. Built in walnut and kingwood veneers with ormolu mounts, glass, and fabric, the cabinet exhibits a warm brown colour scheme. The serpentine front holds a single glazed door that opens to reveal an original fitted interior, a single glass shelf, and button-tufted cream upholstery. Gilded metal mounts accent the upper crest, the corners, and the four shaped cabriole legs, while an ornate keyhole escutcheon sits on the lower door. Measuring 76 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 29 cm deep, the cabinet is proportioned for placement as a decorative tabletop or accent display case in a living room, hallway, or study to showcase small collectables.

FAQs

Originating in 18th-century France during the reign of Louis XV, the vitrine was designed specifically to store and display valuable porcelain, glass, and curiosities. These cabinets featured expansive glass panels, fine wood marquetry, and cast gilt-bronze mounts, serving as status symbols in aristocratic homes.

French display cabinets from this era typically combine fine hardwood substrates with decorative veneers such as walnut, kingwood, or rosewood. They are frequently accented with cast brass or bronze ormolu mounts, clear glass panels, and interior silk or velvet buttoned linings.

Authentic pieces display distinct cabriole legs, serpentine fronts, hand-cut joinery, and heavy cast metal mounts secured with traditional fixings. Inspecting the underside, drawer linings, and veneer backing often reveals hand-planed timber and age-appropriate shrinkage.

Modern interiors balance the ornate details of a vitrine by placing it against neutral wall finishes and alongside clean-lined modern art. The glass interior provides a dedicated space to showcase modern ceramics, sculpture, or curated collections without cluttering the broader room.

Dust wood surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the veneer. Ormolu mounts should be dusted gently without harsh chemical cleaners, which can strip gilding or damage the surrounding wood polish.
