This small French provincial ladies writing table from 1900 is made from fruitwood with a honey brown finish. The honey brown timber shows visible grain across the top, sides and shaped front rail. The piece includes an upper gallery shelf, a pull-out work surface, a single drawer with a carved scroll motif and small round brass handles, a lower open shelf, and cabriole legs terminating in brass sabots. Measuring 81 cm high, 55.5 cm wide and 35 cm deep, it provides a compact workspace suitable for a bedroom, study or hallway. The table functions well as a decorative writing desk or side display table in a traditional or French chateau interior scheme.

Originally created in 18th-century France, a ladys writing desk or bonheur du jour is a compact writing table featuring a writing surface, small drawers, and often an upper gallery shelf for stationery and personal correspondence.

These tables were traditionally crafted from native hardwoods such as fruitwood, walnut, or oak, featuring dovetail drawer construction, hand-carved cabriole legs, and protective cast brass feet known as sabots.

Authentic period writing tables exhibit hand-carved apron details, irregular hand-planed timber surfaces, classical cabriole leg proportions, and original brass fitments showing natural patina and age-appropriate oxidisation.

A compact French writing desk functions well as a hallway console, a bedside table, or a dedicated compact workspace within a living room, paired with contemporary table lamps or neutral linen upholstery to balance the woodwork.

Preserve the timber by keeping the desk away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the protective finish.
