Large 19th Century Ebonised Italian Mirror - No1

19th century
Description

We have been fortunate to get hold of some truly stunning 19th century Italian frames that we have added high quality 6mm mirror plate too.

These mirrors make incredible features on any wall in a great number of interiors. The design is arguably quite contemporary which is why I love this particular style of frame.

The moulding is incredibly fine and when I spoke to my restorer about these he informed me just how hard it is to make this moulding so it really is a testament to the crafts people of the time that created these.

This example is one of our largest with great amount of detail in the frame with nice depth. The ebonised finish has worn away fairly evenly making the frame reddy brown in parts giving a nice patina to it. The original gilt slip is also present.

128cm by 98cm

Can be hung either portrait or landscape.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century Italian ebonised mirrors are characterised by deeply moulded wooden frames treated with black stain or lacquer to imitate ebony wood. These pieces frequently feature contrasting gilded interior slips or sight edges to reflect light and enhance the mirror glass.

These frames were typically crafted from native hardwoods or softwoods such as pine or walnut, which were then stained, painted, or lacquered black. The inner sight lines often featured hand-applied gold leaf over a gesso base, surrounding silvered mirror glass.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-carved or machine-turned mouldings appropriate to the period, natural wear along the high points of the frame, and subtle oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate. The backboard construction typically uses hand-cut timber panels and historic fixings.

The dark, structured profile of an ebonised mirror provides strong architectural contrast when hung against light or neutral walls. It pairs effectively with contemporary minimalism, eclectic art displays, or traditional timber furniture.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to prevent buildup in the moulded profile. Avoid chemical solvents or water on ebonised and gilded surfaces, and clean the glass plate separately by spraying cleaner onto a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror.
