Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency overmantel mirror is a wide, horizontally proportioned wall mirror designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, popular during the early 19th century in Britain. Characterised by Neoclassical architectural influences, these mirrors frequently feature classical cornices, column fluting, and relief mouldings such as palmettes or rope-twist details.

These frames were typically constructed from pine or lime wood, coated with composition or gesso moulding details, and finished with oil or water gilding using genuine gold leaf. The reflective plates were traditionally made with mercury amalgams, which create a subtle tonal distortion unique to period glass.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of age on the reverse, such as dark pine backboards, hand-cut iron nails, and natural wood shrinkage. The gesso work often displays fine hairline cracking known as craquelure, while original mirror glass will usually exhibit light foxing or small dark spots from oxidisation.

In contemporary interiors, a Regency overmantel mirror functions as a focal anchor above a chimney breast, reflecting natural light throughout the room. It can also be placed above a long hallway console table to balance modern minimalist decor with structured historical architecture.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid lifting delicate gold leaf. Water and chemical solvents must be strictly avoided, as moisture dissolves water-gilded gesso bases and permanently damages the surface.
