This Georgian toolbox originates from the workshop of Holtzapffel and Co, made from warm brown mahogany with visible dovetail joints. The piece displays a rectangular form featuring a hinged lid inset with a central brass plaque, complemented by a keyhole fitted with a brass escutcheon and a hanging key adorned with a black tassel. The wooden surfaces show surface scratches, aged patina, and darker wood grain variations. The box measures 13 cm high, 36 cm wide, and 20 cm deep, offering practical storage proportions. Placed in a home today, it sits on an office desk or library table to store everyday items or keep small accessories organised within a workspace.

Georgian wooden boxes were crafted in Britain between 1714 and 1830, characterized by classical proportions, high-quality timber, and functional design. Tool boxes from this era were constructed to store precision woodworking, metalworking, or drafting instruments.

These boxes were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, paired with hand-cut dovetail joints. Secondary brass components, including escutcheons, side carrying handles, and interior hinges, provided reinforced durability.

Authenticity can be verified by examining construction details, such as slightly irregular hand-cut dovetails, original brass hardware with age-appropriate oxidisation, and maker stamps or engraved brass plaques on the lid.

A Georgian wooden box functions as a tabletop accent on an office desk, coffee table, or bookshelf. It serves as decorative storage for modern stationery, small electronics, or personal items while adding historical character to contemporary spaces.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish twice a year to preserve the wood finish. Keep the object away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp conditions to prevent timber movement or splitting.
