Satinwood Commode by James Hicks

1900 - 1920
Description

A semi-elliptical satinwood commode with curved side glazed doors. The fitted interior of one glazed shelf has a pleated silk backing. The marquetry throughout top and side panels is superb in quality; the inner fan in yew is next to sunburst design executed in satinwood with trailing shamrock and floral motifs. The rosewood crossbanding edges towards the boxwood and ebony stringing. The side columns contain further trailing foliate design, with mandolin and fruit. The commode is raised on tapering supports. The centre doors open out and each glazed piece is framed by gilt edging. Solid oak backing. Circa 1900.

James Hicks (1866 - 1936) was born into a family of chair makers (Patrick Hicks) and trained in London before returning to Ireland to open his first workshop in Dublin in 1894 on Lower Pembroke Street.

Straffan Antiques was established in 1988 and is a family run business. We deal in 18th and 19th century Irish, English and French furniture and gilt mirrors. We also stock decorative objects, paintings and sculpture.

Good to know: we deliver nationwide and internationally. And, we are a member of Irish Antique Dealer Association (IADA) and CINOA.

Our showroom in Straffan, county Kildare, is housed in a number of old farm buildings. There's also a café on the grounds serving delicious food, great coffee and tea.

We're open five days a week, Tuesday - Saturday.
