19th Century Coromandel Rectangular Work Box

19th century
Description

A Very Attractive Mid 19th Century Coromandel Wood Rectangular Work Box, The Well Figured Exterior With Original Brass Escutcheon And Hinged Lid Enclosing Lovely Fitted Interior, The Chequered Strung Lids With Original Brass Handles.

This fabulous little work box has a real charm to it. The timber used is highly figured and has retained a good colour. The interior is extremely nicely fitted and the entire piece just has real charm and sophistication to it.

Coromandel is a wood which originated from the Coromandel Coast in India and South East Asia. It is well known as being the cabinetmakers timber of choice for some of the finest antique boxes of the 18th and 19th centuries. It became virtually extinct by the start of the 20th Century such was its popularity and limited availability.

This box is in excellent condition, with just the expected old marks, scuffs and scrapes for something of this age, all of which have now blended in nicely with the overall surface. As with all object we offer for sale the box has been inspected in our workshops by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being placed on sale.

It also comes with working lock and key.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A coromandel work box is a 19th-century decorative storage container crafted from coromandel wood, an exotic hardwood native to India and Sri Lanka. Historically, these boxes were designed to hold sewing accessories, writing implements, or personal valuables.

Nineteenth-century work boxes were commonly constructed with fine hardwood veneers such as coromandel, rosewood, or walnut, often built over pine or oak carcases. Keyholes and accents were frequently inlaid with mother-of-pearl, bone, or brass.

Authentic coromandel wood is recognisable by its distinctive dark brown colour with contrasting black and hazel stripes, displaying a dense grain. Period pieces usually exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, period hinges, and natural age-related patination.

An antique work box can be displayed on a modern sideboard, desk, or bookshelf to add texture and historical contrast. It functions both as a decorative accent and as concealed storage for small contemporary items.

To preserve coromandel wood, dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year. Keep the box away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent the veneer from lifting or cracking.
