A Very Attractive Mid 19th Century Coromandel Wood Rectangular Work Box, The Well Figured Exterior With Original Brass Escutcheon And Hinged Lid Enclosing Lovely Fitted Interior, The Chequered Strung Lids With Original Brass Handles. This fabulous little work box has a real charm to it. The timber used is highly figured and has retained a good colour. The interior is extremely nicely fitted and the entire piece just has real charm and sophistication to it. Coromandel is a wood which originated from the Coromandel Coast in India and South East Asia. It is well known as being the cabinetmakers timber of choice for some of the finest antique boxes of the 18th and 19th centuries. It became virtually extinct by the start of the 20th Century such was its popularity and limited availability. This box is in excellent condition, with just the expected old marks, scuffs and scrapes for something of this age, all of which have now blended in nicely with the overall surface.
