George III Period Mahogany Hall Chairs

18th century
Description

Pair of stylish country house mahogany hall chairs of unusual form. George III period. Circa 1800. The large circular wheel-backs are turned with central bulls-eye roundels. The circular backs are reflected in the circular seats. These contrast with the severity of the square-shaped tapering legs. Although there is a minor height difference between the 2 chairs, this is less obvious when they stand further apart. Good colour and patination.

Dimensions: 49 L x 45 W x H 100 ; seat height 45.5 cm (approx for each).

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Hall chairs were non-upholstered wooden chairs designed for entryways and vestibules during the 18th century, intended for callers and servants waiting to be received.

They were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring solid timber seats and carved decorative backs without fabric upholstery.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved details such as central roundels or crests, solid timber seats without upholstery tack marks, and historical mortise and tenon joinery.

Positioning a pair of hall chairs flanking a console table or positioned in an entrance hall creates architectural symmetry and visual interest in contemporary homes.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically while keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and moisture.
