FAQs

Overmantel mirrors gained immense popularity during the 19th century, specifically designed to sit directly above the fireplace mantel. They served both a functional purposereflecting candlelight and natural light around the roomand a decorative role, often acting as the grand focal point of the principal reception rooms.

These mirrors are typically constructed from a carved wooden base, often pine or softwood, coated in gesso (a plaster-like binder) which was then moulded or carved with intricate motifs. The surface was subsequently gilded with gold leaf or finished with gold paint to achieve a brilliant metallic lustre.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural ageing characteristics such as micro-crazing in the gesso, foxing and oxidisation within the mirror glass, and hand-cut joinery at the corners of the wooden frame. The weight of the timber and the depth of the hand-carved detailing are also strong indicators of period manufacture.

Placing a grand antique mirror above a fireplace adds immediate architectural presence and bounces light across contemporary spaces. It bridges the gap between historical character and modern minimalism when paired with clean-lined furniture and neutral walls.

Gilded surfaces are exceptionally delicate and can be easily damaged by modern chemical cleaners or excessive moisture. Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft feather duster or a microfibre cloth, and use a minimal amount of distilled water on the glass itself, avoiding contact with the fragile gilt edge.
