Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a horizontally proportioned mirror specifically constructed to sit directly above a chimney breast or fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces feature decorative pediments, carvings, and low-profile bases tailored to rest securely above a hearth.

Traditional frames were primarily carved from softwoods such as pine or hardwoods such as oak, then finished with layers of gesso to smooth the grain. Hand-painted coats, often in neutral tones, were paired with gold leaf application on key architectural mouldings and floral carvings.

Look for hand-carved joinery on the wooden framework, natural wear or flaking in the gilding and paint, and early plate glass showing slight silvering distortion or dark foxing spots. Original iron or brass mounting plates on the reverse also signal period construction.

Place the mirror above a contemporary or period fireplace mantle, aligning its horizontal axis with the architectural lines of the room. The contrast between grey paint finish and subtle gilding pairs well with modern neutral walls, stone hearths, and minimalist ceramics.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding wet cloths or liquid cleaners that could dissolve water-gilded gesso or loosen historic paint flakes. Clean the glass carefully with a lightly dampened microfibre cloth, keeping moisture away from the timber edges.
