Victorian Oak Stationery Cabinet

19th century
Description

A beautiful oak stationery cabinet dating from the late 19th Century. It has a lovely rich patina and a sloped front with brass escutcheon. The doors opens out to reveal a series of racks for holding papers and letters. Above this is a perpetual calendar with cloth reels for the days, numbers and months which can be turned using the knobs above. There is also a pen tray, a glass inkwell with brass top and an ink bottle. Below this is a large drawer with brass handle.

It is in very good condition for its age. There are a few small knocks and marks around the outside, general signs of age and use but nothing detrimental. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian stationery cabinet is a specialized tabletop storage unit designed during the nineteenth century to organise writing paper, envelopes, inkwells, and correspondence tools. Typically crafted from hardwoods like oak or mahogany, these cabinets often feature sloping fronts, hinged doors, tiered internal compartments, and integrated perpetual calendars.

Traditional stationery boxes were primarily constructed from solid hardwoods or veneers such as oak, mahogany, rosewood, and walnut. Internal components frequently featured bone or celluloid calendar indicators, glass inkwell bottles, brass hinges, and leather-lined writing surfaces or memorandum slates.

Authentic Victorian examples usually feature hand-dovetailed drawer joints, hand-cut brass fittings, and period-correct mechanisms like rotating paper calendar discs. Look for natural age patina on the timber, historical wear around lock plates, and original glass inkwells with brass or cork tops.

Place the box on a modern study desk, console table, or library sideboard to create a focal point. Displaying the doors in an open position showcases the internal woodwork, making it a functional organizer for modern mail or stationery.

Maintain timber surfaces by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, warping, or fading of the finish.
