This nineteenth-century Japanese tobacco box and figural pipe holder is an Edo and Meiji period Tobacciana object styled for a gentleman's library. Constructed from warm brown wood, mother-of-pearl, and cord, the ensemble displays detailed hand-carving and finishing. The piece consists of a seated Daruma figure with wide inlaid mother-of-pearl eyes, an open mouth showing the tongue, and a hooded head, joined by a cord and an ojime bead to an elongated carved wooden pipe holder depicting a tall stretching man with bare torso and trousers. The wood exhibits variegated dark and light brown tones across both carved figures. The tobacco box measures 15 cm in height. Placed upon a bookshelf, this decorative object suits studies, home libraries, and display cabinets as a conversation piece. Collectors of traditional Japanese carvings appreciate the expressive facial features of the Daruma figure and the slender proportions of the matching pipe holder. The contrasting dark finish on the standing male figure complements the warmer tones of the seated container below. The organic materials, including the cord and spherical bead, complete the interconnected composition of the set. Display this sculpture on a shelf or mantelpiece to showcase the intricate wood grain and detailed craftsmanship in an interior setting.

A tonkotsu is a traditional Japanese carved wooden container designed to hold loose tobacco, while a kiseruzutsu is a matching holder for a long-stemmed smoking pipe (kiseru). Together with an ojime bead and cord, these items formed a portable sagemono set worn suspended from a kimono sash.

These sets were primarily sculpted from dense hardwoods such as boxwood, ebony, or cherrywood. Additional details, such as eyes or decorative elements, were often inlaid using mother-of-pearl, ivory, bone, or contrasting horn.

Authentic period pieces exhibit smooth, natural wear from handling, particularly around cord holes and contact points. Quality indicators include detailed hand-carving, original patina, precise joining mechanisms, and natural oxidation within recessed areas.

These compact sculptural items are ideal for displaying in glass cabinets, on polished wooden bookshelves, or mounted on bespoke presentation stands to highlight the detailed wood carving and three-dimensional form.

Keep carved wooden items away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and humid environments to prevent warping or splitting. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre brush and avoid using chemical cleaners or water.
