This nineteenth-century Louis XVI style nursing chair has a giltwood finish, a gold frame, and burgundy velvet upholstery with floral cut and figured patterns. The piece incorporates an oval backrest, carved ribbon cresting, a moulded frame, reeded arm supports, an overstuffed seat with a moulded seat rail, and turned fluted legs with original brass castors. Visible details include slight wear to the original gilded surface and traditional coil springing. The seating measures 77 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 68 cm deep, with a seat height of 36 cm. It functions as a comfortable occasional or bedroom chair in a domestic interior.

A nursing chair is a low-seated, armless upholstered chair designed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to allow mothers to nurse infants comfortably while wearing structured period attire.

Giltwood chairs feature hand-carved hardwood frames covered in layers of gesso and applied gold leaf gilding, combined with traditional webbed seating, horsehair stuffing, and woven fabric upholstery.

Authentic period pieces exhibit genuine leaf gilding over gesso with subtle rubbing revealing underlying clay bole, hand-carved frame joinery, original brass castors, and period-appropriate proportions.

Position the chair in a master bedroom corner, dressing room, or alongside contemporary seating in a living room to function as a low-profile decorative accent.

Dust giltwood surfaces lightly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or feather duster, avoiding liquids, wax polishes, or chemical cleansers that can dissolve gesso and damage delicate gilding.
