This pair of large Jacobean revival armchairs, dating from c.1900, is made from dark brown oak with green and yellow floral tapestry upholstery. Each chair has a tall backrest topped by a carved and pierced cresting rail, along with padded armrests supported by twist carved pillars and scrolling acanthus terminals. The frames include turned and block legs connected by twist carved stretchers at the front, sides and centre, supporting generously proportioned sprung seats covered in a dense woven floral pattern that continues onto the rear of the backrest. The oak surfaces display a polished wax finish, highlighting the natural grain. Measuring 122 cm high, 66 cm wide and 63.5 cm deep, these armchairs provide substantial seating. In a contemporary home, these chairs suit principal reception rooms or studies, providing formal seating around a central fireplace or reading table. Their traditional design pairs well with classic or eclectic interior schemes, adding architectural presence and textural contrast to neutral walls and wooden flooring. The robust construction supports regular use in domestic settings, while the detailed carving and rich fabric bring traditional English country house character to living spaces or libraries.

Jacobean Revival furniture gained popularity in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, referencing seventeenth-century English designs characterised by heavy oak construction, intricate carving, and spiral-turned barley twist supports.

These armchairs were typically constructed from solid European oak timber and upholstered with durable woven wool or cotton tapestry fabrics featuring botanical and floral patterns.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved crest rails, spiral barley twist legs and stretchers, pegged or mortise-and-tenon joinery, and natural age patina on the timber surfaces.

Position the pair symmetrically alongside a dark wood sideboard or place them flanking a stone fireplace to create a balanced focal point in a traditional living space.

Clean the carved oak timber with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically, while vacuuming the woven tapestry fabric gently on low suction to remove dust without disturbing fibres.
