Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cheval mirror, also known as a cheval glass, is a full-length floor-standing mirror mounted on a dual-upright frame that allows the mirror plate to tilt. Originating in the late eighteenth century, these mirrors were created to provide a complete view of a persons attire for dressing.

Traditional giltwood cheval mirrors feature a hand-carved timber frame coated with gesso, followed by water-gilding using fine gold leaf. The central frame rests on two turned vertical supports joined by a lower stretcher, anchored by carved trestle legs or scrolled feet.

Authentic giltwood displays age-appropriate wear, such as subtle rubbing showing the red or yellow bole clay beneath the gold leaf, along with natural cracking in the gesso surface. The backboard is typically hand-sawn timber secured with oxidised iron fixings rather than modern plywood or Phillips screws.

A giltwood cheval mirror acts as a focal architectural feature when positioned in a master bedroom, dressing room, or grand hallway. The gilded surface contrasts effectively against neutral lime-washed walls or deep muted tones while reflecting natural light across the room.

Clean giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to remove dust, avoiding liquid cleaners, water, or chemical sprays that can dissolve gesso or strip gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass separately by spraying glass cleaner onto a cloth rather than directly onto the surface to prevent moisture seeping behind the frame.
