This Victorian country armchair is constructed from ash and elm with a warm brown timber colour and a curved wooden top rail above vertical lath back slats. The seating is formed by a solid shaped saddle seat flanked by scroll-carved armrests resting on turned upright supports, while the understructure consists of ring-turned legs joined by stretchers. The furniture measures 113 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. In a modern interior, this piece serves as a traditional rustic farmhouse seating option suitable for placement around a dining table, beside a fireside, or in a study as a desk chair. The construction remains solid with tight joints and original surfaces showing natural wear appropriate to its period.

Maintain the timber by applying clear beeswax polish along the grain twice per year, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement, and dusting regularly with a dry cloth.

This style serves as an accent chair in modern farmhouse kitchens, paired alongside contemporary dining tables, or positioned in an entry hall or reading nook with textured textiles.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-turned legs, wedged tenon joinery through the seat, natural wear on the armrests and stretchers, and distinct grain variations across the different timber species.

These chairs were constructed using native British hardwoods, combining elm for the contoured saddle seat due to its split-resistant grain, alongside ash or beech for the bentwood elements and turned legs.

A lath back armchair is a traditional British country chair featuring vertical flat wooden slats (laths) framed by a shaped crest rail and turned uprights, widely produced during the nineteenth century.
