Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tortoiseshell jewellery boxes became prominent during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, particularly throughout the Georgian and Regency eras. Craftsmen applied thin sections of polished shell onto wooden frameworks to create luxury vanity items for wealthy households.

These caskets were typically constructed with a solid timber frame covered in paper or metal foil to enhance contrast, over which pressed tortoiseshell plates were applied. Keyholes, plaques, and interior fittings frequently featured silver, brass, or ivory embellishments.

Authentic period pieces feature irregular organic patterning with natural depth and slight variations under magnification. Shell plates were assembled in sections, often showing subtle seam lines and hand-cut dovetail or joinery construction in the wooden substrate.

Place the casket as a decorative accent on a bedroom dressing table, a living room sideboard, or inside a curated display cabinet. Pairing organic tortoiseshell patterns with modern metallic or neutral stone surfaces creates an effective textural contrast.

Keep tortoiseshell items away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent warping or cracking of the shell veneer. Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid water or chemical solvents, applying a light coat of microcrystalline wax if necessary.
