A Queen Anne style walnut-framed settee (Circa 1930) - I have tentatively attributed this attractive and comfortable settee as being an early design by Parker Knoll. Established in 1931, Parker Knoll is now a renowned British Furniture manufacturer known for its high-quality upholstered furnishings, however, its roots can be traced back to the 19th Century. During the first half of the 20th Century Frederick Parker & Sons amassed a collection of antique chairs dating from 1670s to 2015, to provide models for inspiration and reproduction. In 1931, Willi Knoll formed a partnership with Frederick Parker. Willi was the inventor of an innovative form of a tension spring system, that enhanced the comfort of upholstered furniture, a system that Parker Knoll fully embraced and marketed. On acquiring this charming two-seater, I could see that it needed completely refurbishing, however, its curvaceous shape, walnut crossbanded centre rail, and finely carved cabriole legs were so appealing that I... felt it worthy of being restored and re-upholstered to Culvertons'' usual high standard. Its fine and supportive hardwood-frame is synonymous with Parker-Knoll’s pre-war production, a period when Queen Anne designs were popular. On removing the existing fabric, we were careful to retain its Parker Knoll trade label so it could be reinstated; even though this label was much later in date than the settee itself, and the vintage storage label that was attached to one of the springs, we felt stitching it into the new upholstery gives extra weight to our attribution. After traditionally restoring and repolishing its walnut frame, we decided to recover the settee with Mia Tia, a vibrant contemporary take on a tweed, with rich hues and textured flecks, from Bute Fabrics. They are based on the Isle of Bute, in the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. Whether it is by Parker Knoll or has been refurbished by them during its lifetime, its a finely constructed, elegant, comfortable and versatile settee.
Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.
We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.
