Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century wall mirror belongs to the French Chateau style and measures 133.4 cm high, 163.8 cm wide, and 6.4 cm deep, designed to hang in either portrait or landscape orientation. The piece takes a lobed quatrefoil shape with a moulded outer rim featuring gadrooned decoration along the frame edge. The construction incorporates giltwood, glass, plaster, and gold leaf, showing a bright gold finish across the entire carved surround. Today, this mirror functions effectively above the mantel in a principal living room, hallway, or dining space. The reflective glass plate provides a clear surface, while the substantial proportions suit large wall areas within period interiors.

FAQs

A quatrefoil mirror features a frame shaped with four overlapping lobes, an architectural silhouette originating in Gothic design and widely revived during the nineteenth century.

Nineteenth-century gilt mirrors typically feature carved timber or moulded plaster composition over a timber frame base, finished with hand-applied gold leaf over a clay bole ground.

Authentic period gilt frames often exhibit subtle craquelure in the gesso layer, areas of wear revealing red or grey bole beneath the gilding, and light oxidisation on the mirror plate.

A gilt quatrefoil mirror functions effectively above a fireplace mantel, an entryway console table, or a sideboard, offering a structured focal point that complements classical and contemporary schemes.

Dust the frame lightly using a soft brush to prevent damage to fragile gilding, and clean the glass plate with a damp microfibre cloth without applying liquid sprays directly to the frame.
