Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) and is characterised by a revival of historic styles, heavy ornamentation, and the use of dense, dark timbers like rosewood and mahogany.

Cabinet makers of the era predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut, often paired with upholstered seats featuring horsehair stuffing and wool, velvet, or needlepoint coverings.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-accurate joinery, hand-carved detailing, timber shrinkage and oxidisation consistent with age, and traditional upholstery methods beneath modern fabric layers.

Mixing period seating with a contemporary dining table creates a curated, eclectic aesthetic that highlights the craftsmanship of the antique chairs while grounding them in a modern space.

Maintain antique chairs by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and clean the wood periodically with microfibre cloths and conservation-grade wax.
