Early 20th Century Evertaut Industrial Workshop Chair

1920 - 1940
Description

This original Evertaut industrial chair dates from the 1930s and was designed for use on factory and workshop floors. Built for machinists, it features a solid adjustable steel base with a shaped wooden seat and curved metal backrest, offering both strength and practical comfort.

The surface shows genuine wear consistent with age and use, giving the chair a rich, honest patina that can’t be replicated. Every mark speaks to its working past, making it as visually compelling as it is functional.

Today, the chair works beautifully as a statement piece in a studio, home office, kitchen island or commercial interior, where its industrial form and sculptural lines bring character and edge.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Evertaut seating was originally developed in the early-to-mid 20th century in Britain to provide durable, ergonomically shaped seating for factory workers, draughtsmen, and office personnel during the industrial expansion.

These chairs were typically constructed using tubular steel or cast iron frames, pressed steel backrests, and heavy-duty timber or plywood seats designed to endure commercial usage.

Authentic examples often feature stamped manufacturer branding on the metal backrest or support frame, visible steel rivets, industrial adjustment mechanisms, and heavy-gauge metal fabrications.

An industrial task chair functions as a functional accent piece when paired with a modern home office desk, reclaimed timber table, or clean-lined minimalist study setting.

Preserve the wooden seat by applying a clear beeswax polish periodically, while gently cleaning the metal framework with a dry cloth and applying microcrystalline wax to protect against oxidisation.
