A stunning original large antique Georgian period mahogany parcel gilt mirror. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1800-1820 period.

It is beautifully designed and of amazing quality. The frame has fantastic, crisp gilt carving throughout, including a very impressive eagle at the top. It also has plenty of beautifully detailed parcel gilt on the sides.

This is in lovely condition for its age, we have had the frame re-polished and the gilding has also been professionally touched up. There is plenty of patina and charm, with no real damage to be seen. There is also a little wear to the silvered backing of the mirror, which looks as if it is the original glass.

Popularised during the 18th century, these mirrors often featured classical motifs like eagles, acanthus leaves, and scrollwork.

Craftspeople primarily used dense mahogany or walnut backings combined with lime wood or pine for carved gilded sections. Hand-applied gold leaf was affixed using water gilding techniques over gesso, while silvered plate glass formed the reflective surface.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn backboards, original mercury-gilding or aged gold leaf with natural wear, and lap-jointed timber frames. Look for hand-carved details in the giltwood flourishes and subtle irregularities consistent with period craftsmanship.

Position the mirror above a mantelpiece or console table to act as a focal point that draws light into the room. The contrast between warm mahogany and gold accents complements both traditional panelled walls and modern minimalist backdrops.

Clean the glass carefully using a soft cloth lightly dampened with glass cleaner, avoiding contact with the gilt frame. Dust the carved giltwood gently with a soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water, solvents, or commercial waxes that can degrade delicate gold leaf.
