This elm, ash, and oak stick back Windsor armchair belongs to the 19th century English Country style. The timber displays a rich warm brown patina, complemented by a solid wooden saddle seat, a curved hoop backrest, and slender vertical spindle supports. Turned front legs include ring turnings and ball feet, supporting the traditional construction beneath sweeping, continuous wooden arms. Measuring 88 cm high, 54 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this rustic farmhouse piece functions practically as a desk chair, a reading seat in a study, or an occasional chair in a living room. The sturdy proportions and traditional framing make it a durable choice for daily seating needs around a dining table or in a hallway.

FAQs

A stick back Windsor chair is a traditional piece of English vernacular seating characterised by a solid wooden seat into which round-tenoned back spindles and legs are fitted directly.

Windsor chairs typically combine various regional hardwoods, frequently utilising saddle-shaped seats carved from elm for durability, paired with steamed ash, beech, or yew for bent parts and spindles.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-carved saddle seats showing micro-variations from adze tools, wedge-jointed tenons through the seat, original turned leg construction, and age-related surface patina around the joints.

Incorporate the chair as a standalone accent piece in a minimalist hallway, pair it with a modern dining table to create visual contrast, or style it alongside a textured throw pillow in an eclectic reading nook.

Dust regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding modern aerosol sprays, excessive water, and direct placement near central heating radiators.
