Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a specialized wall mirror designed to be mounted above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popular throughout the 19th century, these mirrors feature wood frames layered with gesso and gold leaf gilding, crafted with architectural profiles to complement grand interior proportions.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or lime wood foundations covered in layers of fine plaster known as gesso. Gold leaf was applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, housing silvered or mercury-backed glass plates secured by hand-sawn wooden backing boards.

Authentic period examples feature hand-planed wooden backboards, natural wear or oxidisation on the mirror glass, and subtle distress where the red or grey bole beneath the gold leaf shows through. Machine-carved modern reproductions typically lack these layered timber backings and soft gilt patina.

Position the mirror centrally above a chimney breast or fireplace mantel to create a focal point and amplify light. To balance classic gold gilding with contemporary decor, pair it with neutral wall colours, minimalist ceramics, or contemporary lighting.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth to avoid lifting delicate gold leaf. Water and harsh chemical solvents must be avoided, as moisture can dissolve underlying water-gilded gesso bases.
