Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Gilt wood mirrors have a rich tradition in Italian craftsmanship, particularly flourishing during the Baroque and Rococo periods where artisans used intricate hand-carved wooden frames coated in thin layers of gold leaf to reflect candlelight and display status.

These pieces are typically constructed from softwoods such as pine or lime, which are hand-carved, coated in gesso, smoothed, and then meticulously finished with gold leaf applied by hand over a bole base.

Authentic pieces often show signs of age such as minor losses to the gesso, oxidisation or foxing on the original mirror plate, hand-tooled carving marks, and the use of older assembly methods like hand-cut nails or pegged joints.

Pairing an ornate gilded mirror with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a striking focal point, using the metallic warmth and historical texture to contrast cleanly against neutral plastered walls.

Preserve gilt surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and high humidity, dusting gently with a soft dry microfibre cloth, and strictly avoiding liquid cleaners or chemical polishes which can strip the delicate gold leaf.
