Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

These frames were typically constructed from carved softwood or composition ornament applied to a wooden base. The distinctive gold finish was achieved through water gilding or oil gilding, applying ultra-thin sheets of gold leaf over a prepared gesso and bole foundation.

Authentication relies on examining the glass plate for minor imperfections, foxing, and wavy distortions typical of historical manufacturing processes. Additionally, inspecting the rear timber for age-related shrinkage, hand-cut screws, and original backing boards provides strong evidence of period origin.

Positioning an antique overmantle mirror above a modern minimalist fireplace creates a striking juxtaposition of historic texture and clean lines. Alternatively, leaning the heavy frame unsecured against a drawing room wall adds architectural depth and reflects ambient light without permanent wall fixings.

Gilded surfaces are exceptionally fragile and sensitive to moisture; cleaning should be restricted to very gentle dusting with a dry, soft feather duster or an ultra-soft makeup brush. Never use chemical solvents, commercial glass cleaners, or water, as these can strip the delicate gold leaf layers.

An overmantle mirror is a large-scale looking glass traditionally designed to hang or sit directly above a fireplace mantel. They gained immense popularity during the Victorian and Regency periods, serving both a decorative function and a practical purpose to reflect natural light around dimly lit period rooms.
