This pair of Japanese export vases originates from the 1920 to 1930 period in the Taisho or early Showa style. Modelled in ivory-toned earthenware with a fine, even craquelure, the bodies feature midnight-blue shoulder and base bands enriched with overglaze enamels, floral borders, and gold leaf highlights. The decoration includes hand-painted mountainous landscapes with pagodas among pines, lush greenery, and water scenes rendered in tones of green, blue, and brown alongside immaculate gilding on the rims and footrings. Each vase has an ovoid form measuring 13 cm high. Suitable for display in a traditional interior, these decorative ceramic pieces sit comfortably upon a mantelpiece, sideboard, or display shelf within an English country house setting. They require careful placement away from high-traffic areas to preserve the delicate enamel surfaces and soft kirabiki sheen. The sturdy ceramic construction allows for stable positioning on flat display surfaces without additional support.

Satsuma pottery originated in the Satsuma province of Japan during the late sixteenth century, characterised by its cream-coloured earthenware, subtle crackle glaze, and intricate polychrome enamel decoration featuring gilding.

Satsuma ceramics feature a fine earthenware body coated with a clear crackle glaze, embellished with hand-applied overglaze enamels, detailed brushwork, and gold leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces display a distinct fine-mesh crackle glaze beneath the surface, detailed overglaze enamel painting, gilded highlights, and maker or shop marks on the base, such as those from Tashiro Shoten.

A pair of Satsuma vases can be arranged symmetrically on a console table, mantelpiece, or sideboard top to act as focal decorative accents that complement both classic and contemporary decor.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush, avoiding water submersion or abrasive chemical cleaners that could damage the delicate hand-painted enamels and gold gilding.
