Description

This Antique Cigar Box beautifully combines solid mahogany with elegant sterling silver mounts. Crafted in 1919, the piece is fully hallmarked for London. This box was designed for a gentleman’s smoking room - both practical and decorative. The rich, reddish-brown mahogany case features a beautifully grained wood surface, complemented by sterling silver mountings on all four corners, hinges, and a central strap handle.

The box opens in the centre via two hinged flaps, each secured with silver mountings and finely crafted hinges. Once opened, the interior reveals two deep, plain compartments - originally intended for cigars but also ideal for modern use as a desk box or jewellery case.

Measurements:

Height (including handle): 5 1/2" (approx. 14cm)

Width: 10 3/8" (approx. 26.5cm)

Depth: 7 1/2" (approx. 19cm)

Total weight: 1334g

In good condition – Structurally sound with a smooth finish and rich patina. There is some minor marks to the silver corners, consistent with age and adding to its charm. Hinges are secure and function smoothly.

Antique cigar and tobacco boxes gained popularity during the 19th and early 20th centuries as refined accessories for gentlemens studies, often crafted from exotic hardwoods and mounted with sterling silver hardware.

These boxes are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or cedar, and frequently feature sterling silver mounts, corners, and handles to reinforce the structure and add decorative contrast.

Authentic pieces from the early 20th century can be identified by hallmarks stamped on the silver components indicating the assay office, date letter, and makers mark, alongside traditional joinery and natural ageing of the wood.

This item can be styled on a study desk, coffee table, or bookcase to add a layer of historical texture, contrasting well against contemporary minimalist furniture.

Maintain the wood with a microcrystalline wax to preserve the finish, and use a specialist silver cloth to gently clean the metal components without allowing polishes to come into contact with the wood.
