Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian writing slope is a portable wooden box featuring a hinged lid that opens to reveal an angled writing surface lined with leather or velvet. Popular throughout the nineteenth century, these boxes were designed for travelling and contained dedicated compartments for inkwells, quills, paper, and letters.

High-quality writing slopes were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as figured walnut, mahogany, or rosewood. They were frequently decorated with brass edging, stringing, and cartouches, while high-security examples featured specialised iron or brass Bramah pattern locks.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct joinery, natural timber patination, and fitted brass hardware with historical wear. Look for original locking mechanisms, flush brass corner bindings, and hidden spring-loaded secret drawers concealed behind partition walls.

Place the closed writing slope centrally on an office desk, sideboard top, or library table to serve as a decorative focal point. It can also be displayed open on a deep shelf to showcase the internal writing leather and brass fittings.

Dust the exterior timber regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood veneer. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight or radiators, which can cause timber veneer to crack or lift.
