FAQs

Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, developing from vernacular woodworking traditions where individual components like legs and spindles were turned on a lathe and fitted into a solid wooden seat.

Authentic chairs of this type typically feature a combination of native timbers, utilising elm for the heavily sculpted saddle seats due to its interlocking grain, combined with ash, beech, or birch for the turned spindles and legs.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks on the underside of the seat, hand-turned variations in the spindles, traditional wedge joints where the legs pass through the seat, and natural patination accumulated over decades of use.

These pieces function effectively when paired with a scrubbed pine or modern minimalist dining table to create visual contrast, introducing warmth and historical character into a clean, modern spatial design.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, treating the surface periodically with traditional beeswax, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
