Corner chairs, also known as roundabout or horseshoe chairs, emerged in the early 18th century and remained popular through the Victorian era, designed specifically to fit snugly into room corners or to be easily manoeuvred in smaller spaces.

These pieces are typically constructed from native hardwoods such as oak, elm, or fruitwood, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, turned supports, and frequently dropped-in upholstered pad seats.

Authentication relies on examining timber patination, hand-cut joinery marks, historical tool impressions, and the integrity of the frame construction rather than modern fasteners or synthetic glues.

These versatile pieces can be incorporated into contemporary settings by placing them in awkward room corners, utilizing them as occasional desks seats, or contrasting their rich timber tones against minimalist decor.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to protect the wood finish and upholstery, and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the timber surface.
