FAQs

Lathback chairs emerged in Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries as a sturdy, practical seating option for domestic farmhouses and cottages, evolving from earlier Windsor chair traditions.

They were typically constructed using a combination of native hardwoods such as elm for the sculpted seats, ash or beech for the bentwood components and spindles, and pine or fruitwood for the legs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned components, pegged joints, adze marks on the saddle seats, and natural wear patterns such as surface patina and timber shrinkage consistent with age.

Pairing these chairs with a contemporary or reclaimed timber dining table creates a balanced contrast that introduces warmth and historical character to modern spaces.

Maintain the timber by cleaning with a soft, dry cloth, applying traditional beeswax periodically to nourish the wood, and keeping the chairs away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
