Description

We have been fortunate to get hold of some truly stunning 19th century Italian frames that we have added nice quality mirror plate too. These make incredible features on any wall in a great number of interiors. The design is arguably quite contemporary which is why I love this particular design of frame. The moulding is incredibly fine and when I spoke to my restorer about these he informed me just how hard it is to make this moulding so it really is a testament to the crafts people of the time that created these.

This example is our largest with great amount of detail in the frame with nice depth. The faux tortoiseshell is also a beautiful feature that contrasts with the ebonised frame perfectly.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical polishes, water, or abrasive cleaners, which can damage the delicate varnished finish or the historical wood surface over time.

An antique ebonised mirror serves as a striking focal point when hung above a minimalist fireplace, a sleek sideboard, or in a contemporary hallway to create contrast against neutral walls and add historical depth.

Authentic 19th-century mirrors often display period characteristics such as hand-beveled glass with minor oxidisation, old wood shrinkage cracks behind the ebonised finish, hand-cut joinery, and aged backing boards secured with period fixings.

Faux tortoiseshell finishes were traditionally achieved through meticulous layering of translucent tinted varnishes, pigments, and glazes over a light metal leaf or prepared ground to simulate the rich amber and dark brown patterning of real tortoiseshell.

Ebonising is a chemical or staining process used to darken wood, typically fruitwood or pine, to imitate expensive ebony. This technique gained significant popularity during the 17th century and experienced major revivals in the 19th century, particularly in European decorative arts.
