FAQs

The Chippendale mirror style originated in 18th-century England, heavily influenced by the rococo, Chinese, and Gothic designs popularized by cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale in his influential publication The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director.

These pieces were typically constructed from carved softwoods such as pine or lime, which were then layered with gesso, meticulously hand-carved, and finished with gold leaf applied over bole using traditional water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces are identified by inspecting the gesso and gold leaf for genuine ageing, oxidisation, and craquelure, as well as examining the timber construction at the rear, hand-cut joinery, and early mirror glass which may exhibit minor foxing.

An ornate gilt mirror acts as a powerful focal point and can be balanced in a contemporary setting by pairing it with minimalist furniture, clean architectural lines, and neutral walls to let the intricate craftsmanship stand out.

Gilt surfaces are extremely delicate and should be dusted gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster. Never use water, liquid cleaners, or chemical solvents, as moisture will rapidly damage the fragile gesso and gold leaf layer.
