Pair of Mahogany Arm Chairs in Manner of E. W. Godwin (1833-64)

19th century
Description

A pair of substantial and well made mahogany open arm chairs in the manner of Edward William Godwin (1833-64). Stamped 'WT' to the underside of each chair. C.1890.

The design bears striking similarity to a known EW Godwin design of 1881 (ref: Spring '99.. Exhibition catalogue. London: The Fine Art Society, 1999. No. 38); a photograph of the design has been included in this listing for ease of reference.

Each chair boasts a tall slatted back lathe with a wide top rail above a recessed moulded seat, all above turned front legs and raked back legs united by finely turned H stretchers and terminating in brass castors.

The chairs show signs of light wear commensurate with age with some scuffs in areas and some small areas of wear to the finish (please see photographs). Generally both chairs remain in a very good handsome condition.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
