FAQs

Tortoiseshell finishes became prominent in furniture and decorative arts during the 17th century, prized for their rich amber and dark brown mottled patterns, often emulating exotic materials using horn or specially treated paints and resins.

Traditional tortoiseshell work often utilised genuine hawksbill sea turtle shell veneered onto a wooden base, while later and contemporary interpretations achieve the distinct mottled effect through specialised painting techniques, layered varnishes, or treated resins on wood.

Authenticity in older pieces is typically determined by examining the backing materials, construction joints, the depth of the translucent amber layers, and signs of age-related oxidisation or wear on the finish.

Tortoiseshell mirrors add warmth and rich texture to contemporary spaces, working particularly well when paired with neutral walls, mixed metals, or placed above a mantelpiece or sideboard as a focal point.

Preserve the finish by dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding direct sunlight, harsh chemical cleaners, or excessive moisture that could damage the delicate surface layer.
