This pair of garden urns dating from 1920 follows a Victorian style and stands as a matching set made from cast iron with a weathered green paint finish and rust patina. Each vessel displays a fluted bowl beneath a scalloped rim, a rope twist moulding around the middle, and a turned pedestal base resting upon a square plinth. The metal shows visible surface wear, authentic aging, and traces of corrosion. Measuring 50 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, these sturdy planters suit placement beside the front door or within a sunlit conservatory to hold seasonal plants or floral arrangements.

Cast iron garden urns originated as popular decorative outdoor accents during the nineteenth century, drawing inspiration from classical Greek and Roman pottery forms. They typically feature fluted bodies, decorative rims, and sturdy square bases designed to withstand outdoor weathering.

These vessels were created by pouring molten iron into multi-piece sand moulds. Once cooled, the cast sections were assembled, joined, and coated with protective oil-based paint to shield the iron against atmospheric moisture.

Authentic pieces exhibit distinct mould seam lines, substantial weight, and natural surface oxidisation or layered paint patinas. Reproductions often lack the refined casting details and heavy structural mass of nineteenth-century originals.

These architectural vessels can be placed indoors in a sunroom, positioned beside a entryway door, or displayed near a fireplace hearth to add architectural structure and textural contrast to contemporary spaces.

Ensure drainage holes remain unblocked to prevent standing water from freezing and fracturing the metal. Applying a coat of microcrystalline wax periodically helps stabilise surface rust and preserve existing paint layers.
