A campana urn is a classical bell-shaped vessel derived from ancient Greco-Roman pottery styles, characterised by an inverted bell silhouette, flared rim, and pedestal base. During the nineteenth century, these forms were widely reproduced in cast iron for formal garden landscapes and terrace settings.

Nineteenth-century iron urns were manufactured by pouring molten pig iron into sand moulds. This casting process allowed foundry workers to produce heavy, durable garden vessels with precise decorative detailing, such as gadrooning, leaf moulding, and elaborate scroll handles.

Authentic nineteenth-century cast iron urns display distinct casting seams, heavy overall mass, crisp relief detailing, and a natural surface oxidisation or layered paint patination acquired through long-term exposure to weather.
